I’ve Made a Website, Now What?

If you have recently made your own website, congratulations, now the real work begins. Simply having a website and thinking that millions of visitors will flock to it, is merely a happy thought that won’t come true. You can in fact get those visitors to your website, but you have to make sure that you guide them there first.

The World Wide Web is a vast ocean of websites and there are thousands of new websites that will come online at all times, so you have to be sure that you are doing everything you can in order to stand out from the other millions of websites that exist today. This is where search engine marketing, or SEM, comes in.

Just as you would market to people to get them to come to your brick and mortar store, you have to market to the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing in order to get them to come to your website. Why, because if they like what they see, then you get listed higher in their rankings. The higher you are listed, the more people that find you while conducting searches online.

Before you set out to conduct some much needed SEM, you have to first ask yourself if you have the time and knowledge it will take to adequately conduct SEM. SEM these days is an art form and while there is a great deal that you can probably do on your own, there is likely a great deal more that you can’t.

Of course the more you do, the better your results. So, you may wish to consult with an online marketing professional and explore all of your options. To start with, they will sit you down and look at your website. Then they will formulate a plan and explain to you everything they want to do in order to help you gain website traffic. This is where you can look and see what you can and can’t do on your own and what you even want to get done in the first place.

Some words of caution here; don’t be fooled. There are many fly-by-night online marketing companies that will promise you a Google page one ranking in two days for just a few bucks. Like many other things in life, if it sounds too good to be true, that’s because it probably is.

While you don’t have to do anything that the online marketing professional suggests, just remember that even the best looking website in the world is useless if nobody knows it’s there. So, you need to be doing something now that you finally have your website completed.

SEM is also something that has to be done on a consistent basis. While the phrase, “If you build it they will come,” was great for the movies, it doesn’t apply to websites. In order to stay ahead of the game, you have to always be willing to conduct proper SEM and you have to be willing to do so it a steady basis if you wish for true online success.
